$700 billion. That’s the cost of turnover to US employers in 2021.  Turnover cost includes activities a company does to replace an employee, such as picking up the slack for lost productivity, recruitment, (job posting, hiring, interviewing), onboarding, training, etc.

The effects of the pandemic and great resignation amplified two lessons we already knew: turnover costs hurt a company’s ability to survive; and people will leave a workplace culture that does not value them, by giving them what they need to succeed, or giving them a sense of belonging to make meaningful social connections.

Louder, please!  The biggest reasons why people leave their jobs are: not feeling valued by their managers and organizations, and not having a sense of belonging.

So, if the problem is about turnover or retention, then what can you do about it?  Where do you start?

If your goal is to improve retention, then you must create a workplace culture that values employees, by treating them with equity and giving them a sense of belonging.  Thus, implementing a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative is a smart move if you want to attract and retain diverse talent.

Effective DEI programs focus on improving inclusion.  Because belonging and equity are critical outcomes of inclusion.

When you successfully implement a DEI program, you cultivate a culture of inclusion that values people and gives them a sense of belonging.  And that’s where you start.  Now roll up your sleeves and get to work! 😉

Easier said than done, right?  Yup.  Most DEI programs fail because they don’t have the leadership commitment and a clear roadmap to follow.  According to research, the failure or success of implementing a major change program depends on how much effort leadership focuses on these three factors:

  1. Clear, organization-wide ownership of and commitment to change across all levels of the organization.
  2. Ability to focus the organization on a prioritized set of changes.
  3. Sufficient resources and capabilities to execute changes.

Hence, it’s wise to get concrete support from leadership and focus on ownership and commitment, prioritization of initiatives, and capabilities and resources, before you begin your DEI journey.

Start Your DEI Journey With a Clear Roadmap

Imagine what it would be like if you could have a happy, healthy workplace: where everyone feels like they belong, are valued, and treated with equity.

The AAA (Assessment, Approach, Action) to DEI provides a clear path to inclusion using a step-by-step strategic approach that creates behavioral change in a healthy workplace using DEI principles. The key to success lies in changing organizational structures, like systems and processes, and people’s behaviors. Because ultimately all change is behavioral change.

This is your clear path to inclusion:

Clear Assessment – Conduct a needs assessment to identify gaps. Then align your new vision and strategy for inclusion with your approach to closing the gaps. This step provides clarity on where you are now and where you want to go.

Clear Approach – The assessment helps define your strategic approach to building a culture of inclusion. The best practice approach is to change organizational structures and people’s behaviors. This step provides clarity on how you want to achieve inclusion goals.

Clear Action – Implement your strategic approach using a clear action plan with detailed steps for the results you want to achieve. This step provides clarity on the action you’re taking and adjustments you’re making to ensure that you’re on the right path.

And to sustain the change for inclusion, you must continuously assess, evaluate, and adjust your DEI program so that it remains relevant to the changing dynamics of people and your organization in the years to come.

Why Work With Us?

Our approach to implementing change is based on research, psychology, and HR best practices.  It’s a holistic approach that intersects with organizational psychology and human resources.

We’re a conscious company and social enterprise: living our values and impacting the lives of the people we serve through our consulting and philanthropic work.

We built the AAA Roadmap to DEI because we want to be part of the solution for addressing structural racism and sexism through a process of organizational change. And we know that people make real progress when they begin to act differently, taking their first steps toward change.

The AAA Roadmap: where HR meets psychology to nurture healthy ways of working with all people.

Look, we get it.  Managing people is hard. Especially when it comes to managing inclusion and people’s performance for meeting behavioral expectations. That’s why our approach is special.  We provide the tools and resources for you to improve the way you set, model, and manage people’s behaviors and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.  So rest assured. We have your back!

Discover what is possible when you follow a clear path to inclusion:

• Execute HR practices that meet employees’ needs for belonging, career development, mental health support, flexibility, and co-creating meaningful, engaging work.

• Practice performance management techniques that improve employee relationships because you’re actively demonstrating how you value and treat people fair and equitably by providing the tools they need to succeed.

• Design a safe environment where employees feel valued by others and have a sense of belonging that allows them to bring their whole selves to work without fear of reprisal for being themselves.

The AAA Roadmap is:

a three-stage program – from strategy to implementation – that creates accountability for inclusive goals and results.

• a process for learning and applying concepts from behavioral psychology and human capital management to change your organization’s structures and people’s behaviors.

• an organization-wide change effort that breaks down old structures and ways of influencing people’s behaviors.

• a practical, step-by-step roadmap to promote inclusive behaviors – built by DEI and HR experts with decades of experience implementing people management practices that improve employee engagement and retention.

The AAA Roadmap goes beyond change efforts that only focus on systemic, structural, and policy changes.  It uses Inclusive Climates to encourage an inclusive workplace that treats people with equity and increases a sense of belonging.

Inclusion is about balancing how well people experience belongingness, and uniqueness, and how they experience equity – receiving just and fair opportunities based on individual needs.  It’s a relational construct based on the quality of relationships you build.

Our approach differs from others that focus on systemic change.  Because we use behavioral management practices to help you build quality relationships with everyone.  Regardless of who they are, what they believe in, and who they love.

When people experience inclusion, they experience a true sense of belonging while also feeling that their individuality is recognized and valued by others.

Inclusion requires real, meaningful action.  Because for things to improve – like advancing diversity goals or the fair and equitable treatment of marginalized communities – organizations must take deliberate steps for inspiring inclusive behaviors that welcome everyone.
